WIDE AWAKE…

It is strange to see this post from October 4 as I think the date is wrong. Today is October 4, so that cannot have been written today.

Anyway, I just read it and felt like it was written by someone else. I recently had a profound sudden loss of a very close friend, and I have been listening to Katy Perry’s song “Wide Awake” repetitively daily walking to and from my studio to work. I must hear this one song at least 15-20 times a day, it seems to be the one song that helps with this grief, while her wonderful song, “Firework” is great but too hard to hear right now. It’s best to hear her singing it, but I wanted to post the words. I will follow this post with a few images of the art work I’ve been doing mostly in my journal in response to this terrible loss of a truly wonderful being and great friend, whom I will miss every day for the rest of my life…

I will post the words to the lyrics. I am a big Katy Perry fan as I love her sense of humor and fun and imagination, but as well, she has written some songs that are really deeply moving and profound, inspiring and helpful during sad times.

here it is:

“Wide Awake”

I’m wide awake

I’m wide awake
I’m wide awake
Yeah, I was in the dark
I was falling hard
With an open heart
I’m wide awake
How did I read the stars so wrong?
I’m wide awake
And now it’s clear to me
That everything you see
Ain’t always what it seems
I’m wide awake
Yeah, I was dreaming for so long

[Pre-Chorus]
I wish I knew then
What I know now
Wouldn’t dive in
Wouldn’t bow down
Gravity hurts
You made it so sweet
‘Til I woke up on
On the concrete

[Chorus]
Falling from cloud nine
Crashing from the high
I’m letting go tonight
Yeah, I’m falling from cloud nine

I’m wide awake
Not losing any sleep
I picked up every piece
And landed on my feet
I’m wide awake
Need nothing to complete myself, no

I’m wide awake
Yeah, I am born again
Out of the lion’s den
I don’t have to pretend
And it’s too late
The story’s over now, the end

[Pre-Chorus]
I wish I knew then
What I know now
Wouldn’t dive in
Wouldn’t bow down
Gravity hurts
You made it so sweet
‘Til I woke up on
On the concrete

[Chorus]
Falling from cloud nine (it was out of the blue)
I’m crashing from the high
I’m letting go tonight (yeah, I’m letting you go)
I’m falling from cloud nine

I’m wide awake
Thunder rumbling
Castles crumbling
I’m wide awake
I am trying to hold on
I’m wide awake
God knows that I tried
Seeing the bright side
I’m wide awake
I’m not blind anymore…

I’m wide awake
I’m wide awake

[Chorus]
Yeah, I’m falling from cloud nine (it was out of the blue)
I’m crashing from the high
You know I’m letting go tonight (yeah, I’m letting you go)
I’m falling from cloud nine

I’m wide awake
I’m wide awake
I’m wide awake
I’m wide awake
I’m wide awake

  1. I’m sorry about your loss…Henry does make a good point though….love love and love some more. What is important is that you love, it changes you even as the loss does. But love is resilient in its changing of you…so love, love what you do, love your people, love your creator and your creativity.
